Former Bafana Bafana winger George Lebese has signed for United Soccer League side Colorado Springs Switchbacks, the club have confirmed.
Lebese, who has played in the Premier Soccer League for Kaizer Chiefs and, less successfully, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, was a free agent having seen offers dry up on the local front.
The 30-year-old will play under Switchbacks’ South African coach Alan Koch as he looks to reignite a flagging career. His new team plays in the second tier of USA football.
“George is a player that we are incredibly excited about. He is in need of a fresh opportunity after many years of success in the South African Premier League. We look forward to supporting him and helping get his confidence back,” Koch told reporters.
“When George is flowing, the team is flowing. He is going to be an integral part of our new-look team and he has the ability to unlock the opposition’s defense through his vision and passing ability.”
Lebese says he is looking forward to the new challenge.
“It’s a great honor and blessing to be given this opportunity to join the Switchbacks family. I can’t extend my sincere gratitude and above all, I just want to thank God for everything,” he told the club’s website.
