It was a good day at the office for two of South Africa’s ‘big three’ with both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns claiming victory, ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ visit of Maritzburg United on Sunday.
New Buccaneers boss Josef Zinnbauer manned the Orlando Stadium touchline for the very first time and watched on as the Soweto giants built on their stellar home form with a 3-1 victory over Black Leopards.
Gabadinho Mhango played a starring role for the hosts who finish a rollercoaster 2019 on a high.
There were also wins for Highlands Park (2-0 vs Golden Arrows) and Stellenbosch FC (0-1 vs Baroka FC) in the other two afternoon games. Victory moved Stellies up and out of the relegation zone, while Bakgaga remain winless on home soil this season.
Sundowns needed an 86th minute goal from Sibusiso Vilakazi to beat Polokwane City 1-0 in Tshwane. Victory for the Brazilians cuts Chiefs’ lead at the top to six points. For Rise and Shine a ninth league defeat in succession leaves them rooted to the bottom of the log standings and Clinton Larsen with a lot of work to do heading into 2020.
Chippa United continued their climb up the log standings with a 1-0 win over SuperSport United in the final game of the day. Xolani Mahola scored the decisive goal for the Chilli Boys, who have now kept five clean sheets in a row.
