It was a bittersweet day for Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi on Saturday as it was confirmed that he would play under one of the world’s great managers, only for his audition in front of his new boss to be ended after just 11 minutes.
Italian great Carlo Ancelotti has been confirmed as the new manager of Everton in a four-and-a-half-year deal, bringing his history of winning 20 trophies, including three UEFA Champions League titles, to the Merseysiders.
It could be a pivotal moment in the career of Iwobi, who could benefit greatly from the experience of the Italian.
But just 11 minutes into Saturday’s clash with former club Arsenal, Iwobi was forced off the field with a hamstring injury as Ancelotti watched from the stands.
It is potentially a significant blow for both the Super Eagles star and Everton, with matches coming thick and fast in the next few weeks giving the Toffees players the chance to impress their new boss.
The extent of Iwobi’s injury has yet to be revealed, but he must be a doubt for the Boxing Day clash at home to Burnley.
Everton then travel to Newcastle United two days later, before another away clash at Manchester City on New Years Day. That is followed by an FA Cup trip to Liverpool on January 5.
