SuperSport take aim at resilient Maritzburg

SuperSport United will take aim at a resilient Maritzburg United when the teams meet for an Absa Premiership clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday 8 January 2020, kick-off at 19h30.


SuperSport became the first team to claim a home win over league leaders Kaizer Chiefs this season, defeating the Soweto giants 2-1 on January 4 thanks to goals from Bradley Grobler and Thamsanqa Gabuza. Matsatsantsa have claimed 16 points from eight home matches this season.


Maritzburg extended their unbeaten run to four matches in the league with a 2-1 win away to KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows on January 3 – they struck late goals through Daylon Claasen and Nkosinathi Sibisi. The Team of Choice has claimed just nine points from seven away matches, though they are unbeaten in their last three games on the road.


In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and SuperSport have met in 27 league matches since 2005/06. Matsatsantsa have claimed 15 wins compared to just three for the Team of Choice, while nine matches have been drawn. The Tshwane club has recorded seven wins from 13 home matches in the rivalry, suffering two defeats in the process.


When the teams met earlier this season, at Harry Gwala Stadium in November 2019, SuperSport claimed a 2-0 away win thanks to goals from Kudakwashe Mahachi and Sipho Mbule. The clubs have played to just one draw in their last eight league meetings.
