Sadio Mane has been crowned as Africa’s best player for 2019.

The Senegal international beat off stiff competition from fellow English Premier League stars Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez to win the CAF African Player of the Year accolade for the very first time.

Mane was the big winner at Tuesday evening’s award ceremony in Egypt which honoured the continent’s best players and teams for the past year.

The Liverpool forward finished third behind Mahrez and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in 2016 before coming second to Reds teammate Salah in both 2017 and 2018.

Last year finally proved to be Mane’s year with the 27-year-old playing a crucial role in helping the club to three trophies. Mane played a starring role in the club’s run to Uefa Champions League glory before bagging a brace in their Uefa Super Cup triumph.

He also assisted the winner in Liverpool’s Fifa Club World Cup win in Doha last month to cap a memorable year for the Merseyside club, who are well on their way to English Premier League glory this season.

Mane has scored 15 goals and assisted a further 11 in 28 appearances across all competitions this season, and will return to action away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
