KwaZulu-Natal rivals Maritzburg United and AmaZulu will meet for a provincial Absa Premiership derby at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday 17 January 2020, kick-off at 20h00.

Maritzburg come into the clash on the back of a 0-0 draw away to Chippa United on January 11 – the result extended their unbeaten run in the league to six matches. The Team of Choice has claimed 12 points from eight home matches this season.

AmaZulu suffered a ninth defeat of the season when they were beaten 2-0 at home by SuperSport United on January 12 – they have won just one of their last eight league games. Usuthu have taken nine points from as many away matches this season.

In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and AmaZulu have met in 21 league matches since 2006/07. The Team of Choice has claimed 10 wins compared to two for Usuthu, while nine matches have been drawn. The Pietermaritzburg side has claimed five wins from 10 home matches in the rivalry, suffering just one defeat in the process.

When the teams met earlier this season, at King Zwelithini Stadium in December 2019, they played out a goalless stalemate. Maritzburg are unbeaten in their last seven league matches against AmaZulu.
