Bidvest Wits were eliminated from the 2019-20 Total CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Horoya AC at Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry on Sunday.

The Clever Boys showed great fighting spirit in the Group C clash despite being down to 10-men for most of the match, but ultimately came up short in the Guinean capital while Horoya go marching on in this season’s competition.

The hosts pulled ahead after just five minutes as Dramane Nikiema dispossessed Cole Alexander before firing the ball home past Brandon Petersen in the Bidvest Wits goal.

Gavin Hunt’s men bounced back from the early setback and levelled matters through Deon Hotto in the 21st minute. The Namibian rounding off a superb solo effort by curling his left-footed shot into the corner of the net.

Bidvest Wits were dealt a major blow four minutes later as Lehlohonolo Nonyane received his marching orders.

Horoya took advantage of his sending off in the 62nd minute as Boniface Haba’s rasping shot from the edge of the area found the back of the net.

The hosts were then handed an opportunity to double their lead, but Nikiema drove his penalty onto the post and out of danger. It mattered little, though, as Horoya held on for all three points.
