Maritzburg United will look to halt Cape Town City’s momentum in the Absa Premiership when the teams meet at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday 31 January 2020, kick-off at 20h00.
Maritzburg saw their unbeaten streak ended at seven games with a 2-1 loss at Baroka FC on January 26 – their first defeat since November 2019. The Team of Choice has claimed 15 points from nine home matches in the 2019/20 league campaign.
City claimed back-to-back wins for the first time this season, following up a 2-0 victory over Bidvest Wits on January 18 with a 1-0 over Black Leopards six days later – both matches were at home and featured goals from Kermit Erasmus. However, the Cape side has yet to win away from home this season, taking just five points from nine games on the road.
In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and City have met in seven league matches since 2016/17. The Team of Choice has claimed three wins compared to two for the Citizens, while two games have been drawn. The KwaZulu-Natal club has recorded one win and two draws from their three matches as hosts in the rivalry.
When the teams met earlier this season, at Cape Town Stadium in October 2019, Maritzburg claimed a 1-0 away win thanks to a penalty from Thabiso Kutumela. The Team of Choice’s three previous home matches in the rivalry have produced just three goals.
