Mamelodi Sundowns have provided an update on the extent of Thapelo Morena’s injury.

The Bafana Bafana international suffered a terrible leg injury during the Brazilians 1-0 Nedbank Cup round of 32 win over SuperSport United at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

Morena seemed to have suffered a broken leg after lunging for the ball at the end of a foot race with SuperSport’s Onismor Bhasera. The 26-year-old’s right leg stuck into the wet Loftus turf causing for it two snap as his momentum carried him onto his back.

Sundowns have since revealed that the injury is not as serious as initially feared, but that he would undergo an operation on Sunday.

Morena is said to have sustained a fracture as well as ligament damage to his right ankle and will reportedly miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

The speedy utility player, who can function in various roles across the pitch, has directly contributed to 12 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions for Sundowns this season.
