Maritzburg United manager Eric Tinkler has warned interested parties that the club will only sell goalkeeper Richard Ofori for “a lot of money”.
The 26-year-old put up an excellent display for the Team of Choice in their upset 2-1 away win over Absa Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs this past Saturday, with his shot-stopping abilities and defensive organisation underpinning a fine victory at the FNB Stadium.
It was just the latest in a string of excellent performances from the Ghanaian international, who has been on Maritzburg’s books since 2018. He joined the South African club from Wa All Stars, his first professional side.
Ofori has been linked with a move away from United, with SA giants Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns mentioned as possible destinations, while French clubs are also reportedly keeping close tabs on the ‘keeper.
“If someone wants him, it’s going to be a lot of money… that I can tell, because of the qualities that he has,” Tinkler said of Ofori, as quoted by Sowetan Live.
“Richard is a quality goalkeeper, there’s always gonna be interest in him, but he’s a good professional, modern professional… he works extremely hard. There are aspects of his game I still feel he must improve on, but he remains our number one goalkeeper and our captain.”
Ofori will next be in action on the evening of Saturday 22 February when Maritzburg United face Bloemfontein Celtic away from home in the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup.
