Mamelodi Sundowns have moved to within four points of Absa Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs after they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night. It means the PSL table is taking on an interesting look as the season heads towards its climax.

The Brazilians leapfrogged Orlando Pirates into second place on 41 points thanks to the result, which was secured by goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Hlompho Kekana – the latter’s was a sublime strike direct from a free kick to decide the match.

Phunya Sele Sele remain in 10th spot on 25 points, with their goal coming from the boot of Ndumiso Mabena.

The evening’s other match saw Bidvest Wits held 2-2 at home in Johannesburg by Highlands Park. The Lions of the North claimed the lead through Mothobi Mvala, but Wits levelled on the stroke of half time through Haashim Domingo.

The Clever Boys went ahead for the first time through skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo early in the second stanza and appeared on course for victory, until the visitors equalised late on via a Peter Shalulile penalty.

The result leaves Wits in fifth place on 34 points, while Highlands rise to seventh spot on 30 points.

The Absa Premiership takes a break this weekend for the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup, before returning with a full round of fixtures on February 28 to March 1.
