South Africa will not travel to Japan for a pre 2020 Olympic Games friendly in March.

According to BBC Sport concerns over the coronavirus outbreak has led to South Africa deciding against sending its Olympic football team to Japan next month.

South Africa were set to face their hosts in Sanga on 27 March, four months before the start of the world showpiece in Tokyo.

According to the World Health Organization there have been 85 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Japan and one death.

South African Football Association’s (Safa) acting chief executive Gay Mokoena said: “Japan is asking us to reconsider our decision, but we are sticking to our guns. We have to act in the best interest of our players.

“We can’t put the lives of our players at risk. The death toll is rising each day and we are not prepared to take a big risk”.

South Africa booked their ticket to the Olympic Games following a third-place finish at the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
