Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez will lead Africa’s charge in the Uefa Champions League this evening.
The Algeria international will be among a handful of Africans involved in Europe’s premier cup competition later today, with City desperate to keep their hopes of continental glory alive.
The Sky Blues will take on Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu this evening in a first-leg Round of 16 tie and City will be motivated like never before during what has been a disappointing English Premier League defence for Pep Guardiola’s men.
City trail league leaders Liverpool by 22 points and with virtually no chance of catching the Reds atop the standings, the Manchester club’s focus will be on winning the Champions League.
Mahrez has been one of City’s star player in the UCL this season with four assists and a goal in five appearances.
Elsewhere, Lyon will play host to Serie A champions Juventus in Wednesday’s other fixture.
The French club boast several African stars including former Chelsea attacker Bertrand Traore.
Youssouf Koné (Mali), Maxwell Cornet (Ivory Coast) and Karl Toko Ekambi (Cameroon) are on the club’s books with the latter having joined Lyon on-loan from Villarreal last month.
