Bidvest Wits hopes of winning the Absa Premiership title this season took a blow as they fell to a 2-0 loss away to SuperSport United at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday evening.
Teboho Mokoena and Bradley Grobler were on target for the hosts. The result leaves SuperSport in fourth place on the log standings, while the Clever Boys fall down to sixth.
SuperSport opened the scoring through Mokoena in the 33rd minute. Onismor Bhasera rounded his marker before firing in a low cross which picked out the midfielder at the far post for an easy finish.
The Clever Boys improved following the interval and Deon Hotto was only denied the leveller through a superb double save from Ronwen Williams.
The Matsatsantsa goalkeeper was proving very hard to beat and after denying the Namibian on two separate occasions, he pulled off another good save in the 77th minute to keep out Kgaogelo Sekgota’s chance from close range.
Bidvest Wits were dealt a huge blow in the 84th minute as captain Thulani Hlatshwayo was forced from the field with a head injury after the visitors had already made all three of their substitutions.
Things went from bad to worse five minutes later as Grobler sealed all three points for the hosts from the penalty spot following a Sifiso Hlanti foul inside the area.
