Chiefs suffer shock defeat to AmaZulu

Kaizer Chiefs’ Absa Premiership title ambitions suffered a major blow, with Saturday’s action headlined by their shock home defeat to relegation-threatened AmaZulu.

Usuthu, who came into the match at the bottom of the log, defeated the league leaders 1-0 at FNB Stadium courtesy of a goal from Bonginkosi Ntuli on the stroke of half time. The result takes the Durban club to 15th place – still in the relegation playoff berth – but sparks hope for survival.

As for the Amakhosi, they remain seven points ahead of nearest chasers Mamelodi Sundowns (who exited the CAF Champions League earlier today) but have now played two more games – the Brazilians will fancy their chances of denying the Soweto giants a first title in five years.

The day’s action started at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with a Limpopo derby and saw Baroka claim a crucial three points in their fight to avoid relegation, as two goals from Evidence Makgopa secured a 2-0 win over Black Leopards.

We then moved onto the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium for an early-evening clash which saw Golden Arrows hold Orlando Pirates 0-0 – further denting the Buccaneers’ slim hopes of challenging Chiefs and Sundowns for the title. They are just a points behind the Tshwane team, but have played three more games.

The other night clash on Saturday saw Bidvest Wits’ recent indifferent form continue as they were held 0-0 by Chippa United. The Chilli Boys ended with 10 men after the late dismissal of Gerald Modisane, but new coach Rhulani Mokwena will consider the point a solid return for his first game in charge.

The weekend’s Absa Premiership action wraps up on Sunday 8 March with Cape Town City and Highlands Park at home to Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United respectively.
