Al Ahly head coach Rene Weiler blamed fatigue after his side’s impressive winning streak came to an end.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Smouha side in the Egyptian Premier League match on Wednesday.

The team’s 16-match winning run came to an end and they were close to achieving the club’s previous record of 2005 with 17 wins in a row.

The Swiss coach feels that his side’s performance was poor during the game due to the players’ fatigue and the matches’ sequence in the domestic and continental tournaments.

“We played today’s game amid harsh circumstances. We are tired and our key players are absent,” Weiler said on Ahram Online.

“Moreover, we had returned from a game (against Sundowns in South Africa) that caused pressure on the team.

“I am not providing justifications, but Ahly players were out of luck during the game,” the tactician added.

“We are concentrating on the coming games to return to winning ways.”

Al Ahly’s next match is against ENPPI in a league match at the Cairo International Stadium on March 14.
