The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has announced that it has suspended football in the country in all divisions.
The football matches have been suspended for two weeks as part of the measures to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus in the North African country.
This is despite the Egyptian sports ministry having stated that there was no need to suspend sports activities for the time being.
The country’s football governing body has since released the following statement.
“As per instructions from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Youth and Sports, and after reviewing the recommendations of the Medical Committee of the Egyptian Football Association, the Egyptian Football Association decided to suspend football games for 15 days starting Monday.”
“The decision applies to all divisions of local competitions,” the EFA said in a statement.
Al Ahly are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League standings 16 points above second-placed Al Mokawloon.
Their arch-rivals Zamalek are currently placed fourth on the log with a game in hand.
