Nigeria international and Enugu Rangers striker Ifeanyi George was killed in a car accident on Sunday 22 March, aged just 26.
According to Goal the accident occurred at Abudu on Benin-Agbor expressway after his car collided with a parked truck on his way to Lagos. George was one of three people killed in the accident.
“We lost Ifeanyi George this morning. The club will soon come up with a statement soon,” Rangers wrote on their official twitter handle Sunday morning, as quoted by Nigeria’s Premium Times.
The club added: “Ifeanyi George died this morning on his way to Lagos while driving from Enugu. The accident occurred in Abudu just after Agbor in Delta State.
“He had been injured for the past three weeks with a severe waist pain and was told not to drive even in Enugu.”
George, who collected two caps for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, also represented Enyimba in his senior club career.
He was reportedly travelling home after Nigerian clubs suspended all activity due to the coronavirus epidemic.
