Club Brugge look set to be crowned Belgian champions.
This after the Jupiler Pro League’s board of directors recommended that the 2019/20 season be ended early amid the on-going coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which has halted football across the globe.
According to Sky Sports, Brugge will be awarded the title if the board of directors’ decision is endorsed at a general assembly meeting later this month.
Brugge currently sit 15 points clear atop the league standings having lost just once this season. There is only one regular season game remaining, after which the top six teams would compete in a play-off competition, but that system looks set to be scrapped.
As things stand Gent, Charleroi and Antwerp will be handed the European places for next season while bottom placed Waasland-Beveren will suffer relegation.
Brugge boast several African players on their books including Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau, Senegal duo Mbaye Diagne and Krepin Diatta, Ivory Coast’s Simon Deli and Nigerian forward Emmanuel Dennis.
Democratic Republic of Congo forward Dieumerci Mbokani sits atop the scoring charts, level on 18 goals with Jonathan David.
