Former Super Eagles star John Obi Mikel has been offered a lucrative contract to join Brazilian club Botafogo, according to Complete Sports.
The Nigerian media outlet cite ESPN journalist Jorge Nicola, who has claimed on his YouTube channel that Botafogo have made an offer of a contract worth $2million plus per 18 months.
Mikel is currently a free agent, having made a very public departure from Turkish club Trabzonspor last month. The midfielder took issue with the country’s football authorities for refusing to halt activity despite the coronavirus pandemic. The Super Lig has since been suspended, joining the trend of all other major leagues around the world.
Complete Sports adds that Mikel’s wife, Russian model Olga Diyachenko, loves Rio de Janeiro and this could help sway the player to sign for Botafogo.
The 32-year-old Mikel has represented Lyn, Chelsea, Tianjin TEDA, Middlesbrough and Trabzonspor in his club career.
Botafogo is a historic club in Brazilian football, though they have not won the domestic championship since 1995.
