Sadio Mane, 27, has insisted that he shouldn’t be favourite to win the the PFA Player of the Year award, claiming that a Liverpool teammate of his is more deserving of the accolade.
Talking to talkSport, Mane said Reds captain Jordan Henderson should be crowned the Player of the Season for his all round contribution to the team.
Liverpool were well on their way to clinching English Premier League glory in record time and a first top-flight title in 30 years before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic placed an immediate halt on all football proceedings.
But regardless of what happens no one can deny the fact that the Reds are deserving champions with Mane having played a crucial role in Liverpool’s league dominance this season.
The Senegal international has scored 14 goals and assisted a further nine in in 26 Premier League games this season, making him favourite alongside teammates Henderson and Virgil van Dijk to win the Player of the Year award.
Mane told talkSPORT: “I would go for Henderson. He’s been a big part of our success this year, both defensively and in attack.
“He was really good this year. A really good leader and a great captain.”
