One of Africa’s greatest football moments occurred at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States, as Nigeria won Gold in the men’s football tournament.
Led by coach Jo Bonfrere, this ‘Dream Team’ featured future legends such as Nwankwo Kanu, Taribo West, Emmanuel Amunike, Jay-Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi.
Nigeria finished second in their group behind Brazil to advance into the knockout phase and ousted Mexico before coming up against ‘A Selecao’ again in the semifinals – this time the African side won a 4-3 thriller with a ‘Golden Goal’ decider.
The final against Argentina was another Olympic classic, with Nigeria triumphing in a five-goal clash which was decided by a late strike from Amunike.
