Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he was reluctant to take Arsenal’s No.14 shirt at first.
This was after the 30-year-old striker joined the English giants from German club Borussia Dortmund midway through the 2018/19 season.
French legend Thierry Henry achieved legendary status at Arsenal while wearing the No.14 shirt.
Aubameyang only took it when he realized that Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were unwilling to part with his favourite numbers nine and seven respectively.
“I like two numbers, nine and seven,” Aubameyang was speaking on Arsenal TV.
“But he (Lacazette) has nine and Miki had seven. I asked Miki before I came ‘will you be taking the No.7?’ and he said yes so I said ‘OK I will try something else’.
“He left, but I scored a lot of goals with this number 14 so I leave it like this.”
Aubameyang, who is considered to be one of the best strikers in the world, has excelled at Arsenal thus far having established himself as the club’s best player.
The Arsenal captain has netted 49 goals in 75 matches in the English Premier League which has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.
