Legendary Nigerian defender Taribo West once approached coach Marcelo Lippi saying God wanted him to play.

This is according to West’s former Inter Milan teammate Christian Vieri when discussing his time with the Italian Serie A giants.

Vieri revealed this when speaking to fellow Italian legend Marco Materazzi on Instagram.

This happened before a particular Inter match when West was dropped from the starting line-up and he decided to approach accomplished Italian coach Lippi.

“It was Saturday morning, we were all standing around and Lippi told us the line-up so we could go out and get the practice session in,” Vieri said.

“Taribo West stood up and with this big deep voice said: ‘Mister! God told me that I have to play!’

“I was already doubled up laughing before Lippi gave his reply: ‘That’s strange, He didn’t say mention it to me.’ I nearly wet myself.”

West played 64 matches for Inter between 1997 and 2000 – scoring two goals in the process.

He helped the team win the UEFA Cup during the 1997/98 season.
