Premier League giants Chelsea have reportedly opted against using their buy-back clause for Sassuolo’s Ivory Coast winger Jeremie Boga, according to The Guardian.
The 23-year-old has established himself as one of Serie A’s most exciting wide attackers, having scored 11 goals in 52 appearances for Sassuolo since he joined the club in 2018.
This has sparked major transfer speculation, with Chelsea thought of as the most likely candidate given that they had a buy-back clause written into their transfer deal for Boga.
The French-born Ivorian international came through the ranks at the Blues but made only one senior competitive appearance – against Burnley in the Premier League in December 2017.
He had loan spells at Rennes, Granada and Birmingham City, before moving to the Neroverdi in July 2018.
Chelsea, however, will not be exercising the buy-back option, but will reportedly pursue a percentage of a future sale instead.
Boga has also been linked with Napoli, where manager Gennaro Gattuso is a known admirer of the Ivorian attacker.
The African player will hope to help Sassuolo have a strong end to the 2019-20 Serie A season. The Italian top flight campaign was suspended in March but authorities hope to resume in mid-June.
