Legendary Cameroonian defender Lauren says the Indomitable Lions would have defeated Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ in Africa.

The retired right-back is one of the Invincibles which is a title given to the Arsenal squad in 2004 after they went undefeated in the 2003/04 season and won the English Premier League title.

Lauren, whose full name is Laureano Bisan Etame-Mayer, was also part of the Cameroon team which won the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2000 and 2002.

The 43-year-old assessed the two teams and he also explained why FC Barcelona legends Xavi Hernandez and Andre Iniesta would struggle in Africa.

“In a league game or in a tournament? On the pitches that Cameroon had to play on: Burkina Faso, Togo and so on,” Lauren told the Mail.

“Put Xavi, Iniesta, the great Barcelona players on those pitches, let’s see if they can play the same fantasy football.

“It’s two different teams, two different competitions. I would say Arsenal if you’re talking about a competition like the Premier League,” he added.

“But put the games in Africa playing in 35, 40, 45 degrees and I’m telling you that Cameroon wins.”

Lauren announced his retirement from international football at the age of 25 in 2002 having made 24 appearances for Cameroon and scored once.

He is an Arsenal legend having made 242 appearances for the team and scored 11 goals.
