On this day in 2019, South Africa made their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut with a 3-1 loss to Spain in Le Harve.

Banyana Banyana qualified for the world showpiece hosted in France after finishing as runners-up to Nigeria at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

Thembi Kgatlana scored South Africa’s first World Cup goal as Desiree Ellis’ team took a 1-0 lead, but the Europeans mounted a second-half comeback to claim all three points.

The tournament itself proved a baptism of fire for the South African women with a 1-0 loss to China followed by a 4-0 defeat to Germany in their final Group B fixture.
