With Spain’s La Liga continuing its return from lockdown with four matches through Saturday 13 June, African fans will be looking forward to seeing more of their favourite sons strut their stuff – albeit in empty stadiums!

Our star player to watch today is none other than Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze, who is set to feature for Villarreal when they face Celta Vigo at Abanca Balaidos this afternoon (17:00 CAT kick-off).

The Yellow Submarine come into the clash placed eighth on the log, seven points adrift of a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League, while Celta are in a more precarious position in 17th – just one position and one point above the relegation zone.

The 2019-20 campaign has been a learning curve for Chukwueze, who has not quite managed to replicate the form he showed last season. He has managed just three goals and one assist, though the Nigerian’s efforts have been hampered by injury and an inability to establish himself as a regular starter: just half of his 26 league appearances have been in the starting XI.

With the season effectively ‘reset’ by the coronavirus, Chukwueze now has the chance to end 2019-20 on a high. If the Super Eagles star can get back to his devastating best, it could not only help Villarreal possibly sneak into Europe for next season, but also increase his value as a sought-after target in the transfer market.

Other African stars to watch in La Luga today include Chukwueze’s Villarreal teammate Andre Franck Zambo Anguissa, Lumor Agbenyenu and Iddrisu Baba Mohammed for Mallorca against Barcelona, Mohamed Salisu Karim for Real Valladolid away to Leganes, who will likely feature Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem.
