On this day 10 years ago, Ghana got their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign off to the perfect start with a 1-0 win over Serbia at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.
The Black Stars edged past their Group D rivals thanks to a Asamoah Gyan penalty in the 84th minute of play. Richard Kingson, who celebrates his 42nd birthday today played a key role in the win, in what proved to be a stunning World Cup campaign for the West African’s.
Ghana would follow the victory with a 1-1 draw against Australia and despite losing 1-0 to Germany, they advanced into the knockout stages. The Black Stars defeated the United States 2-1 in the Round of 16 before falling to Uruguay in dramatic fashion.
