Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo believes that the departure of George Maluleka for Mamelodi Sundowns will open an opportunity for a player like Siphelele Ntshangase to shine.

Maluleka’s contract with the Amakhosi has expired and he has been released to join the Brazilians, where he is set to become a key player from the 2020-21 season.

Chiefs are banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows and filling the gap left by Maluleka will fall to those already within the club.

Khumalo believes that Ntshangase and other players battling to earn playing minutes have been presented with a great chance to establish themselves in the starting XI.

“It is an opportunity for boys like Ntshangase. It is up to them now to raise their hand and say, ‘Wow, there’s an opportunity, I want to grab it’,” Khumalo told IOL.

“I’m not saying the departure of George will create automatic opportunities but this is a chance for some of the players to raise their hands and come to the party.”

On Maluleka’s release despite the season still being unfinished, Khumalo added: “I believe that they wouldn’t have allowed George to leave now if they didn’t have a plan to proceed with their title challenge without his services.

“They are on the verge of winning the league and I’m sure such a decision was well thought out.”

Chiefs top the Absa Premiership log with 48 points from 22 matches. Nearest chasers Mamelodi Sundowns have 44 points from 21 matches. The season is expected to resume in August.
