On this day in 2019, Algeria booked their place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final following a 2-1 win over Nigeria at Cairo International Stadium.
An own goal from William Troost-Ekong was cancelled out by Odion Ighalo’s second-half penalty and with the game on the cusp of extra-time, Player of the Tournament Ismaël Bennacer won a free-kick on the edge of the area.
In what would prove to be the final kick of the game, Riyad Mahrez thumped a left-footed drive past Daniel Akpeyi in the Super Eagles goal and into the roof of the net as the Desert Foxes claimed a memorable win.
The Manchester City winger would go onto lifting the title as he steered his troops past Senegal in the final for Algeria’s second continental crown.
