Premier League club Southampton are reportedly set to win the race to sign Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu from La Liga’s Real Valladolid.
Spanish media outlet AS reports that Salisu would prefer a move to England over one to Ligue 1 club Rennes, who had been in negotiations with Valladolid.
Salisu reportedly prefers a move to the Saints because he is more comfortable speaking English rather than French, as well as the glamour of playing in the Premier League and a superior financial offer with greater stability.
The 21-year-old Ghanaian has been on the books of Valladolid since 2017 and his current deal with the club – penned as recently as May – runs to 2022.
Viewed as a ‘rough diamond’ with great potential, Salisu is a 6ft 3in centre-back who has racked up 31 appearances, one goal and one assist in the 2019-20 La Liga season.
He has yet to be capped by Ghana’s Black Stars, but is likely to be called up if and when international football resumes later in the year.
Valladolid have already secured a replacement for Salisu, having signed Javi Sanchez from Real Madrid.
