Former Mali international Frédéric Kanouté has singled out Thomas Partey as the best African player currently plying his trade in Spain’s top-flight.

LaLiga hosted the Sevilla legend and former Real Madrid midfielder Christian Karembeu in a virtual press conference on Monday morning.

Kanouté was duly asked which African player has impressed him the most in LaLiga this season and it should come as no surprise that Partey was top of his list.

“I would say… it is difficult to answer, but there are two players that have impressed me. The one is Samuel Chukwueze, but if I had to choose one I’d say Thomas Partey,” said Kanouté.

“I think he took his game to another dimension this season and he is all over the place, in the middle of the park and he’s impressed me in terms of his quality of passing, recovering and winning so many balls as well, so I will say Thomas Partey as number one.”

The Atletico Madrid midfielder is an important part of Diego Simeone’s set-up and his form has not gone unnoticed, with several clubs said to be vying for his signature.

The Ghana international has scored two goals in 33 LaLiga appearances this season and was also key to their UEFA Champions League win over Liverpool earlier this year.

Nigeria’s Chukwueze is one of the game’s rising stars and the Villarreal winger has also been linked with a move to several English Premier League clubs over the last few months. The 21-year-old has scored three goals and assisted a further five in 35 games for The Yellow Submarine this season.
