Roger Assale’s second goal in as many games wasn’t enough as CD Leganes suffered relegation back to the Segunda Division on Sunday.
The Ivory Coast international joined the Spanish club on-loan from Young Boys in January and netted two goals in 14 appearances, while also providing three assists in their failed bid for survival.
Los Pepineros headed into the final game of the 2019/20 season in need of a win against the newly crowned LaLiga champions Real Madrid at Estadio Municipal de Butarque, as they aimed to avoid the chop.
Assale kept the hosts hopes alive with a 78th minute equaliser, but Real would hold firm in the closing stages as the game ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw.
Leganes ended the season in 18th spot, a point behind Celta Vigo and they duly fall back into Spain’s second division after four years where they will be joined by Mallorca and Espanyol.
