Benfica have reportedly joined the race to sign Islam Slimani from Leceister City.
According to A Bola as reported by Tribal Football, the Portugese giants have joined rivals Sporting Club de Portugal in monitoring Slimani’s situation.
Jorge Jesus is set to take over the reins at Benfica after leaving Flamengo following an extremely successful year in charge of the Brazilian club.
Jesus spent six successful years as Benfica head coach before working with Slimani at Sporting where the duo fell agonizingly short of winning the Portuguese top division in the 2015/16 season.
Slimani spent last season on-loan at French Ligue club AS Monaco where he netted nine goals in 19 matches.
The 32-year-old signed for the Foxes on a big money move in 2016, , but has never really settled at King Power Stadium — scoring just 13 goals in his 46 appearances for the club.
Slimani, who was part of the Algerian side that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, spent three successful years at Sporting between 2013-16. He scored 57 goals in 111 appearances while helping the Portuguese club to two trophies.
