Nigeria international Simeone ‘Simy’ Nwankwo is staying put at newly-promoted Italian Serie A side Crotone.
The 28-year-old striker is coming off a successful 2019/20 season which saw him clinch the Italian Serie B Golden Boot after netting 20 goals for the Shark of Calabria.
Nwankwo, who has been on the books of Crotone since 2016, will not be sold according to the club’s chairman Gianni Vrenna.
“We will keep at least nine players for next season including Alez Cordaz, Junior Messias, Salvatore Molina, Simy [Nwankwo] and also Ahmad Benali, with which we are in the process of finding an agreement,” Vrenna said on Goal.
“Then we will try to strengthen the squad and make it compete with three or four players.
Since joining the Shark of Calabria from Portuguese side Gil Vicente in 2016, Nwankwo has hit the back of the net 44 times in 112 league appearances.
Vrenna is a big fan of Nwankwo and he explained how the towering marksman played an integral role in helping the team secure promotion back to the elite league.
“He is a player in my heart. Since he arrived, I have been one of the few who believed in him; who stimulated him and who were close to him,” he continued.
“He is an exceptional man; he also took receives insults. Now is his time, I repeat: he is a great man, as well as a great player.”
