Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates played to a 0-0 draw in the first Absa Premiership game in the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) bio-bubble at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Buccaneers were the better team and created a catalogue of chances in the second-half, but poor finishing cost them all three points. The result moves Sundowns three points behind league leaders Kaizer Chiefs but now having played the same amount of games as the Amakhosi. Pirates move up to third.

Sundowns conjured the first chance of the match in the 23rd minute as Sphelele Mkhulise picked out Themba Zwane with a pin-point cross but he was brilliantly denied by Wayne Sandilands who got down well at his near post.

It was all Pirates after that with Fortune Makaringe getting the very best out of Denis Onyango in the 57th minute. The Buccaneers midfielder burst into the area and looked sure to score but Onyango’s fingertips pushed the ball onto the post at out of danger.

Luvuyo Memela and Ntsikelelo Nyauza squandered further chances for the visitors before Paseka Mako missed a gilt-edged chance to claim all three points for Pirates with five minutes of regulation time remaining.

After dancing his way past Ricardo Nascimento he only had the goalkeeper to beat but could manage to drag his resulting shot wide of the Brazilians goal as the two teams shared the spoils.
