The coronavirus pandemic has halted much of football across Africa, but there are still several major leagues which have got up and running. We pick the top three games on the continent today, Saturday 15 August. All times CAT.
15:30: Polokwane City v Kaizer Chiefs
South African Absa Premiership
A key game for both sides in South Africa’s Absa Premiership, which has only just got going again after a five-month absence. Log leaders Chiefs are pursuing their first league title in half a decade and are desperate to keep ahead of nearest chasers (and reigning champions) Mamelodi Sundowns, but Polokwane find themselves in the midst of a relegation scrap and would love to put a big dent in the Soweto giant’s ambitions.
19:00: Raja Casablanca v Rapide Oued Zem
Moroccan Botola Pro
Raja are locked in a fierce title battle for the Moroccan Botola Pro with Casablanca rivals Wydad and cannot afford to drop any points at home to Rapide – a team they have only managed to draw against in their last two meetings (0-0 in December 2019 and 3-3 in May of the same year). The Green are fresh from back-to-back 2-0 wins over Olympic Safi and Hassania Agadir, and will back themselves to remain in charge at the top of the log.
20:00: Zamalek v Misr Lel Makkasa
Egyptian Premier League
Zamalek’s hopes of chasing down Egyptian Premier League leaders Al Ahly are faint indeed, but they will see their domestic league matches – including this clash against Misr Lel Makkasa tonight – as important preparation for the upcoming CAF Champions League semifinal against Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca. Makkasa, meanwhile, need a positive result to keep their heads above water as far as potential relegation is concerned.
