Top Gauteng clubs Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits were both in action in the Absa Premiership on Friday.
Wits boosted their chances of finishing in the top three in the league with a victory over AmaZulu FC at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
Two second-half goals from Rowan Human and Deon Hotto helped the Clever Boys secured 2-1 win over a relegation-threatened AmaZulu side.
Lehlohonolo Majoro grabbed a late goal for Usuthu, but it proved to be a consolation as the hosts held onto their lead until the match ended.
The win saw Wits climb up to the fourth spot on the league standings, while AmaZulu remained 15th which is the relegation play-off spot.
Meanwhile, Sundowns’ hopes of winning this season’s Absa Premiership title were dented after they drew with Maritzburg United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
Masandawana took the lead twice through Hlompho Kekana and Ricardo Nascimento in each half.
However, the Team of Choice scored twice through Rushine De Reuck and Thabiso Kutumela to ensure that the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The draw saw the defending champions Sundowns remain second on the league standings – five points behind leaders, Kaizer Chiefs, while Maritzburg remained sixth on the log.
Lastly, Black Leopards boosted their hopes of surviving relegation by securing a 2-1 win over Lamoville Golden Arrows thanks to Mwape Musonda’s brace at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
Knox Mutizwa netted for Arrows, who slipped down to the 10th spot on the table, while Leopards climb out of the relegation zone into 13th spot.
