On the day of Tokelo Rantie’s 30th birthday we take a look back at one of South Africa’s proudest footballing moments in recent history.

The former Bournemouth forward became a household name in Sweden with Malmo FF before ill-fated stints in England and Turkey preceded a return to South Africa with Cape Town City in August 2018.

Rantie failed to make a single appearance for the Citizens and similarly had his contract terminated at Mamelodi Sundowns just over a year later without having kicked a ball in anger.

Rantie’s decline is difficult to comprehend, especially considering the important role he played in leading South Africa to a famous 2-0 win over bitter rivals Nigeria in June 2017.

Bafana Bafana had come so close to beating the Super Eagles on the back of a Rantie brace at the same venue three years prior and finally registered a competitive win over the West Africans thanks to the forward’s opener and Percy Tau’s late strike under Stuart Baxter’s tutelage.
