Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey has replaced Inter Milan defender-cum-midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah as Ghana vice-captain.
The decision has been made by new Ghana head coach CK Akonnor ahead of the Black Stars’ 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Sudan which will be played in November 2020.
Swansea City midfielder-cum-striker Andre Jordan remains the Blacks Stars captain.
While goalkeeper Richard Ofori, who is on the books of South African side Maritzburg United, has been named as second vice-captain.
The Ghanaian Football Association (GFA) released the following statement:
A statement read: “The technical team of the senior national team, the Black Stars, upon a broad consultation, has maintained Andre Ayew as captain of the side.”
“The Swansea City attacker who led Ghana to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, maintains his position as leader of the team despite changes at the technical realm of the senior national team. “In a related development, Thomas Teye Partey of Atletico Madrid has been appointed as the first vice-captain while Richard Ofori steps in as second vice-captain.
“The trio will lead the team as the Black Stars go through the remaining Africa Cup of Nation qualifiers as well as the qualifying games for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar and subsequent tournaments.”
Ghana are placed at the top of their qualifying group (Group C) standings having won their first two matches against Sao Tome Principe and South Africa.
