Aduana Stars striker Yahaya Mohammed has accepted being left out of Ghana’s squad for their October friendly match against Mali.
The veteran attacker was called for the Black Stars’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Sudan back in March, though the games were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ghana coach C.K. Akonnor last week named a 23-man squad for the Turkey-based friendly against the Eagles, with the list made up exclusively of foreign-based players.
With no professional football played in Ghana since the 2019-20 season was halted back in March, it is understandable that domestic players had no real chance of a call-up.
“I’m not surprised by my exclusion on Black Stars call-up,” Mohammed told Kumasi based Pure FM, as quoted by Football Ghana.
“I would have been bold to tell C.K. Akonnor that I can’t be part of the squad if I was called upon.
“The reason is simple, I have been off the pitch for some time now and I lack match fitness,” he added.
The 2020-21 Ghana Premier League season is set to begin in mid-November.
