The reason why Ghana international Thomas Partey did not start for Arsenal against Manchester City has been revealed.

The defensive midfielder was introduced in the closing stages of the English Premier League match as Arsenal succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to City on Saturday.

Partey was making his official debut for the Gunners after joining the club from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid during the recent transfer window.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why he chose not to name Partey in the starting line-up at City.

The Spanish tactician brought Partey on at the Etihad with eight minutes remaining, but Arteta wants to give him time to adjust to his new surroundings.

“Yes, we will see how quickly we can make it with him,” said Arteta on the club’s official website.

“I think we have to respect that process and that timing for him because he only trained for a day really and there’s a lot of new information and different game models for him to understand,

“And we have to respect that. But I think when he came on he looked good.”

Partey will be hoping to make his full debut for the Gunners when they take on Austrian club Rapid Vienna in the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League Group B match on Thursday.

The 27-year-old is competing with Dani Ceballos, Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka in the Arsenal midfield department.
