Edouard Mendy kept a clean sheet on his Uefa Champions League debut for Chelsea on Tuesday evening.
The Blues were held to a 0-0 draw by Europa League champions Sevilla at Stamford Bridge. Mendy started in goal after recovering from injury sustained while on international duty with Senegal this month.
The 28-year-old proved to be a calming influence at the back as Chelsea kept a rare clean sheet under Frank Lampard.
“It’s a positive result. I understood the need to get a result in the first game of the group,” Lampard told reporters in the aftermath.
“They’re a really good team, it was an interesting game and I’m happy with the 0-0; it was a big deal to get a clean sheet.”
Sevilla also started the game with a shot-stopper from the African continent. Morocco’s Yassine Bounou has cemented himself as the Spanish club’s first choice and adds to a growing list of African goalkeepers making their mark on the European stage.
