On this day in 2016, Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned Caf Champions League winners for the first time following a 3-1 aggregate win over Zamalek.

The Brazilians beat Zamalek 3-0 in Atteridgeville thanks to goals from Anthony Laffor, Tebogo Langerman and an own goal from Eslam Gamal. Stanley Ohawuchi scored the only goal in the second-leg hosted in Alexandria, but Sundowns had done enough to claim the continental crown.

Four years later and Pitso Mosimane has another shot at claiming Africa’s premier club prize. The former Bafana Bafana coach left Sundowns for Al Ahly this month after eight successful years at Chloorkop.

Al Ahly, who are record eight-time champions of the tournament, take on Wydad Casablanca in the second-leg of their semifinal showdown on Friday evening, following a 2-0 win for the Egyptian’s in Morocco last weekend.

The aggregate winner will face either Raja Casablanca or Zamalek in the final next month.
