Nigeria international Alex Iwobi will be given a chance to cement his place in the Everton starting line-up with key players unavailable.

This is according to the English club’s manager Carlo Ancelotti with Iwobi having struggled for game time this season and he is yet to start a Premier League match since July 2020.

Richarlison and James Rodriguez, who are preferred ahead of Iwobi, are expected to miss the Toffees’ Premer League clash against Southampton on Sunday.

Brazilian forward Richarlison is suspended, while Colombian playmaker Rodriguez is nursing an injury.

“We have to put in other players who have the desire to play,” Ancelotti told the club website.

“We are working this week on this and I think we are going to choose a good line-up for the game against Southampton.”

The Italian tactician praised Iwobi, who has netted once in six matches across all competitions this season which is his second campaign with the Toffees.

“Alex is a player who works hard. He is fast and with his quality he can help the team be better in certain situations. He [potentially] has an opportunity to play but also we have Bernard and Anthony Gordon,” he added.

“We have a lot of opportunities to replace Richarlison and James. We are already moving on.”

The 24-year-old Iwobi played 25 matches for Everton in the Premier League last season and netted once in the process.
