Cameroon defeated Mozambique 2-0 in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo on Monday night.
As a result, the Indomitable Lions opened a six points gap at the top of the Group F table, while the Mambas remain second on the standings.
The Mambas, who were desperate to avenge their 4-1 defeat to Cameroon, got off to a bright as they looked to grab an early goal in order to unsettle the visitors’ defence.
Mozambique were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute, but Reginaldo failed to convert it as he hit the woodwork from the spot-kick.
The hosts were left to rue that missed opportunity as the Indomitable Lions opened the scoring four minutes before the half-hour mark.
Ngoumo Ngamaleu set-up Vincent Aboubakar, who made no mistake as he beat Mozambique goalkeeper Julio Franque to make it 1-0 to Cameroon.
It was the Besiktas JK marksman’s third goal in two matches against Mozambique having grabbed a brace last week Thursday in Douala.
The Mambas pushed for the equalizing goal with the half-time break fast approaching with the likes of Elias Pelembe, Kamo-Kamo and Luis Miquissone working hard in attack.
However, Cameroon were able to contain Mozambique and the Indomitable Lions were leading 1-0 at the interval.
The Indomitable Lions, who have already qualified for the 2022 AFCON finals by virtue of being the tournament hosts, continued to attack after the restart.
Antonio Conceicao, the Cameroon coach, introduced Belgium-based striker Serge Tabekou just after the hour-mark.
The Royal Excel Mouscron marksman made an immediate impact on the game as he beat Franque to make it 2-0 to Cameroon in the 73rd minute.
Ngamaleu, who was a constant threat to the Mozambique defence on the night, recorded his second assist of the match after setting up Tabekou.
The Mambas launched late attacks as they looked to pull one back, but the visitors stood firm at the back and ultimately, Cameroon ran out 2-0 winners on the night.
