The 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers resumed this month with countries involved in matchday three and four action across the continent.
Defending Afcon champions Algeria became the third team after hosts Cameroon and Senegal to qualify for the tournament, doing so with a 2-2 draw away to Zimbabwe at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Monday.
Goals from Andy Delort and Riyad Mahrez fired the African champions into a two-goal lead before Knowledge Musona and Prince Dube found the back of the net for the hosts. The point, though, proved to be enough for the Desert Foxes who duly punched their Afcon ticket.
Mahrez’s goal will go down as one of the most memorable in Afcon qualification in recent memory. Saïd Benrahma found the Algerian captain with a cross-field pass and having beat Adam Chicksen with the most audacious of first touches, the Manchester City winger bamboozled the Zimbabwean defender two more times before driving a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
