On this day in 2013, South Africa recorded a memorable 1-0 win over Spain at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
La Roja lifted the World Cup title at the same venue three years prior and returned to Soccer City on the 19th of November 2013 for an international friendly match versus Gordon Igesund’s Bafana Bafana.
Bernard Parker scored the only goal of the match with 56 minutes on the clock. Tokelo Rantie picked out Kamohelo Mokotjo who in turn steered the ball into Parker’s path with the latter chipping it over an onrushing Victor Valdez.
For Parker the goal served as some redemption for the own goal he had scored just a few months prior in South Africa’s 2-1 defeat away to Ethiopia, a loss which proved pivotal in their failed attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
