Ghana captain Andre Ayew is a doubt for Swansea City’s clash with Rotherham on Saturday according to manager Steve Cooper.
Ayew and Marc Guehi returned early to Swansea from their respective international duties with Ghana and England Under-21s as a precaution due to hamstring issues.
Forward Ayew is currently the Swansea top scorer with five goals to his name in the English Championship.
Ayew missed the Black Stars’ second game against Sudan in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier due to an injury.
While Guehi, who is eligible to play for Ivory Coast, has excelled at the back for Swansea this season as they look to secure promotion to the English Premier League.
“Andre and Marc came back early from international duty, that was precautionary more than anything else,” Swansea manager Cooper told the club’s official website.
“Obviously we have had a busy schedule and they have played every minute of every league game up until now.
“They then went into a full-on international camp, so they are naturally going to be tired and, like everybody, going to be at risk of fatigue,” he added.
“From fatigue you can start feeling some strains and muscle soreness, so they came back early as a precaution. They are doubts for the weekend, but we haven’t made a final call on it as yet.”
Ayew scored twice for Ghana as they secured a 2-0 win over Sudan at home in Cape Coast, but the Black Stars lost 1-0 to the same opposition in Omdurman on Tuesday.
